Green Rock Correctional Center investigating inmate’s abuse claim

The allegation comes as Green Rock absorbs 1,000 inmates from Pennsylvania. Local leaders in Pittsylvania County are concerned with the safety of residents after the new inmates arrive and the ability of locals to visit Virginia inmates, many of whom have been transferred to other state prisons

Remembering his hands swollen to the size of softball mitts, Anthony Solomon Ashford said he asked again and again and again Sept. 11, 2009, for correctional officers to replace his handcuffs.

Ashford said the handcuffs strangled his wrists for 10 hours while he waited for treatment at Danville Regional Medical Center, an allegation Green Rock Correctional Center is investigating.

Virginia Department of Corrections officials said they could not comment for this story.
