Outbreak of superbug, jail conditions spur hunger strike

SUNBURY — Two state inmates at Northumberland County Prison are on a hunger strike to protest poor conditions in the jail, including an outbreak of a medically resistant staph infection.
Prison board chairman Frank Sawicki said Warden Roy Johnson was notified Thursday that two inmates were refusing to eat, but said he was unaware about their claims of unsanitary conditions inside the North Second Street facility.
“If someone chooses not to eat, we can’t stop them,” Sawicki said.
