Immigrants Are Not For Sale

The short video is on the Correction Corporation of America & the Immigration and Customs Enforcement and their attempt to open the country’s largest private immigration detention facility in south Florida.

The video features south Floridians voicing their criticism both against CCA’s/ICE’s facility and against the phenomena of private immigration detention centers/prisons. The petition asks Rep. Debbie Wasserman to stand with her constituents and “say no to CCA.”

IMMIGRANTS ARE NOT FOR SALE

We call on Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-20) to WITHDRAW her current endorsements for CCA’s project.

The Obama Administration announced a change in the priorities for detentions and deportations, to focus on real national security concerns, not on separating parents from their children or deporting DREAMers who are only seeking a better future.

It is time for ICE to stop the immigrant money making machine and tell CCA to GO AWAY from Southwest Ranches.

SIGN PETITION and tell REP. DEBBIE WASSERMAN SCHULTZ To Say NO to CCA!

Proposed immigrant prison could bring new jobs and new questions

From: Morning Call

A Florida company wants to build a 2,500-bed detention center in Upper Mount Bethel Township.

A private prison operator may build a 2,500-inmate detention center for illegal immigrants in the Slate Belt, a $150 million project that could bring 500 jobs and a rich flow of tax revenue.

GEO Group, a Florida company that operates more than 40 prisons in the U.S. and others abroad, is considering breaking ground just south of the Portland Industrial Park in Upper Mount Bethel Township.
The 128-acre facility would house illegal immigrants, most of whom have committed crimes and are awaiting deportation. The prison could become the area’s biggest private taxpayer, state Rep. Richard Grucela said — and for a rural district that has sought development and job growth for years, that’s a rare windfall.

“We did our research and realized you’re pushing 10 percent unemployment,” GEO Group Vice President of Business Development Cloid Shuler told a Northampton County Council committee on Wednesday. “We’d like to solve that problem.”
But questions have been raised nationwide about the company’s business practices and there are few specifics yet about the Slate Belt proposal.

“Is this the best project? The best scenario? Probably not,” said Jeff Manzi of the Bangor Area Economic Development Authority, saying he wanted to “know about the negatives.”

“What is the best project when you have 10 percent unemployment?”

GEO Group is also looking at sites in Wayne County and New Jersey, said Upper Mount Bethel Supervisor Jerry Geake. That said, the Northampton County site’s proximity to Interstate 80 and other commercial corridors puts it above the competition, Shuler said.

Florida Prison Guard Fired for KKK Membership

This comes from: BET.com Staff

A Florida sheriff’s department fired a prison guard who admitted being a member of the Ku Klux Klan.

Wayne Kerschner, a corrections officer with the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office, was a decorated member of the White-supremacist organization who paid dues, attended out-of-state Klan rallies and blogged regularly on the KKK Web site, The Associated Press reports. His wife was also a member.

Kerschner described the KKK as a faith-based group and said that he believed in the organization’s ideology, AP reports.

The report states that Kerschner didn’t want his role in the group to negatively affect the sheriff’s office, saying that he thought he was a “pretty dang fair officer.”
