From the “hole” (administrative segregation)
This is the last working pen we have. Guards said they no longer provide pens + they won’t let us get to our property to get pens, so this is a way to silence the entire segregation population. Isn’t it coincidental that policy changes like this occur every time I’m placed in segregation? You would almost think this is an effort to silence me, and everyone else impacted are just dolphins caught in a tuna net. So this may be the last anyone hears from me for a while, including my attorney. No pen, no outgoing mail.
As a last matter, all reading material sent to me is withheld, it would be wonderful if out of spite a million people sent reading material and overwhelmed the […] mailroom.

People: Please send this man some mail and interesting politically progressive reading materials (copies)!

Mansfield Correctional Uses Food as Punishment

From our email contact:
July 9th 2012

Ohio has been experiencing an extreme heat wave the past weeks causing deaths as reported by the Columbus Dispatch. Inmates in the 1B pod at Mansfield had a peaceful sit out on Friday 6th of July, related to their recreation time which has been severely limited as a result of the new Tiered system Gary Mohr has implemented.
The inmates were told by Lt. Hoy they would get an extra hour of recreation time and the sit out ended as peacefully as it started. But as a result of this peaceful demonstration they were punished Saturday by not being fed any food until 5 pm on Saturday – now I find this appalling as we know not all inmates can afford commissary food that they stockpile in their cell. And with the heat, the body uses more energy to try to cool itself. The inmates were also kept in their cells with no air movement (they do not have air conditioned cells) to assist the body with cooling itself down.
Many inmates reported feeling ill.  Then on Sunday they did not get fed until 3:30 pm. These inmates did not get a hot dinner but a bagged bologna sandwich while other blocks received hot meals. This lack of nutrition as punishment I find repulsive as I do not treat my pets in this manner nor would I expect fellow man to be treated in this manner by someone who has control over him. These are people the prison is dealing with, they are not animals but are being treated worse than we treat animals, by a system that has control over them. Would you leave a pet in a closet with no air movement or air conditioning when it is over 100 degrees?
The problem with this system is there is no oversight by people not associated with the system. Allowing them to police themselves is not working and allows cruelty and inhumane treatment to continue.

ManCI on emergency lockdown due to violence (May 30th)

We received this via email on May 30th. We were given permission to post it here.

I just got word from a family member whom I email daily at MANCI that it is on emergency lock down for days as there is an uprising in 3B block. There has been multiple stabbings with one reportedly not going to make it as it involved the chest.

That SRT (?) was called in and taking command and they are doing emergency ride outs to Lucasville. The director was called in. This is all due to the new tiered system being implemented.

This is not in the local news as I have searched throughout the day….why is this not being reported.

The new system I feel is a joke they need common sense when they consider segregating to curb violence! By this I mean put all pedophiles together as they are a target by other inmated as they are repulsed. Then consider dividing by the amount of time and known affilations..if they want to curb violence within the system divide them in ways the inmated have divided themselves. In society we do this as we socialize with our friends and live in neighborhoods which are essentially divided on income!

This dividing based on problems in the facility is dumb as they are considering factors such as what is causing the inmates to be violent such as stealing from others, being put in cells with pedophiles whom violence is geared toward, gangs, ect. Where is Director Mohr’s common sense?
